Albania is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets – a country that flies under the radar but ticks all the boxes. Nestled between Greece, Montenegro and the Adriatic Sea, it’s home to stunning beaches, snow-capped mountains, Ottoman-era towns, and a capital city that’s full of colour and character.

Tirana is a charming introduction – a city that blends brutalist architecture with bursts of modern creativity, lively nightlife, and seriously underrated food. But Albania’s real magic happens when you venture further afield – think beach-hopping along the Ionian coast, hiking in the Accursed Mountains, or exploring ancient ruins with barely another tourist in sight.

The cost of living is incredibly affordable, especially compared to most of Europe. Dining out won’t break the bank (you’ll eat well for under £10), and public transport or taxis are inexpensive and easy to use. Most people speak some English, and locals are genuinely welcoming – I felt safe and well looked after the entire time.

My Albania Highlights

I visited Albania in June for a long weekend getaway – and honestly? I was blown away. Not just by the weather (which was a perfect mix of sunny-but-not-scorching), but by the vibe. It’s one of those places that’s completely underrated, and I found myself wondering why more people aren’t shouting about it.

I stayed in Tirana, which is super walkable and surprisingly lively. The city has this cool, laid-back charm – think bougie cafes, colourful buildings, and a mix of old-school grit and up-and-coming creative energy. Tirana Park was one of my favourite spots – it’s just outside the city centre and wraps around a big, peaceful lake where you can wander, people-watch, and take a moment to reset.

Food-wise? Italian influence is strong here (thank you, geography), and I can confidently say that the pizza and pasta game is solid. One of the absolute standouts was Artigiano Vila – I’m talking 10/10 food, cocktails, atmosphere… the whole lot. Add it to your list immediately. And because I believe balance is key, I followed up the carbs with a trip on the Dajti Express cable cars, which glide you high above the city with amazing views. It’s a great way to see Tirana from above.

History buffs – or anyone curious about Albania’s communist past will find the Bunk’Art museum fascinating (and a bit eerie, in the best way). I took a tour that explored the underground bunkers built during Enver Hoxha’s rule – part art installation, part time capsule. It’s intense but so worth doing if you want to understand the country’s recent history.

Evenings in Tirana are unexpectedly fabulous. The nightlife is buzzing, and I never once felt unsafe walking around. I loved the quirky bars – Radio Bar was a retro dream, while Colonial Cocktails brought out my inner mixologist (and by that, I mean I sipped pretty drinks and took too many photos). There’s definitely a bit of a hidden gem feel here, like you’ve discovered somewhere special before the masses catch on.

And yes, I will return – I have to explore the beaches in the south. Everyone I spoke to raved about the Albanian Riviera – crystal-clear water, white sand, and fewer crowds than neighbouring Greece or Croatia. Sold.
